President Trump’s Motives with SUTO

State of the Union Address: Week 5

For those of you who don’t know, the presidents use the State of The Union Address, also known as Article II, Section 3 of the U.S. Constitution, in a favorable setting and commanding national attention, to gain both political and policy advantage. So what exactly are President Trump’s motives?

It’s not to create unity, nor to negotiate amongst the Democrats about the push for a border wall. Trump continues to wage war for the hard-line immigration policies instead of bringing some sort of freedom from disturbance into the White House. As a result of this, Republicans sprung onto their feet and chanted “U-S-A” with pure joy, while Democrats remained in their seats.

An immigration wall has been Trumps hot issue during his presidency, which no other issue isn’t as important to him. Although most of his State of The Union Address demanded the call for the border, he did speak about other issues: abortion, economic empowerment for women, protecting American jobs, tariffs on products, HIV epidemic.

The president’s speech, created on a theme of “choosing greatness,” came at an altering moment smack in the middle of the president’s term as he seeks to regain momentum after the midterm election defeat.

Typically, presidents who suffer from setbacks within midterms, often reach out to the victorious opposition with words of conciliation, but instead, Trump used the State of The Union Address. President Trump highlighted what he sees as the accomplishments of his first two years in office. Which despite the physical barrier between the Democrats and President Trump, I believe the wall will be accomplished by the power he possesses as a businessman and controversial political figure.

Great post about the SOTU. It’s no doubt that the wall for Trump’s presidency is the most important, and it will be interesting to see how that plays out with the rest of his term. I didn’t even notice that the Democrats didn’t chant “USA”, good catch!
